Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art through the aunt Denise. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt the space she required during the day to indulge in the passion of art, literature, and theater. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an avenue for action. In the same way, her mother was socially aware and taught her to say something through the arts. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town of Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer and was in awe of the idea to film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was still in college. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being asked examine the garbage in the house of one of the jury. Due to her work she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism, and shifted into the public relations industry. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a young publicist for a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency.
